Did the Turkish president say “we are at war against bitcoin”? Investigation

Is President Erdogan so far removed from everything that is happening around him that he has declared war on Bitcoin? Or is this a case of “lost in translation” and quotes out of context? article titled “Turkish President Says: ‘We Are At War Against Bitcoin’He made the rounds on Bitcoin-Twitter, receiving both ridicule and legitimate criticism. However, we did note an important detail: The article does not contain a direct quote from Erdogan. This is a suspect.

Armed with iron will and Google Translate, NewsBTC explored the issue and came to unexpected conclusions.

Let’s go down the rabbit hole.

Is it a war against bitcoin or a war against cryptocurrencies?

The original article cited a major and generally reliable source, Bloomberght’s Turkish-language article titled “Erdogan: We have a separate war against cryptocurrency. Reportedly, the president held a youth meeting program, so his audience was students from all over the country. They were discussing the digital Turkish lira, the country’s proposed central bank digital currency, and one participant asked their current views on cryptocurrency:

Erdogan said that they do not face the problem of opening up to cryptocurrencies, on the contrary, they are fighting a separate war and struggle against them.

Erdogan said: We will not give them such a bonus and we will not give them. Because we will continue our way with our money, which is our primary identity in this matter.”

He never mentioned a war against Bitcoin. Remember that this is a Google translation and you may have lost some information. However, there are contradictions. The president says theyI have no problem“With encryption, but this”On the contrary, they have a separate war and struggle against them.Unlike what? And note that it’s not a direct quote either. In Erdogan’s actual quote, he did not say anything about the war against Bitcoin.

We need more data. Let’s consult other sources.

What exactly did President Erdogan say?

Quick search Leads us to the new Arab. They don’t quote the boss directly, but their translation makes clear the intent of what he said:

Erdogan claimed that the country “certainly” has no problem with the proliferation of digital assets.

However, Turkey will continue with its own money, which is believed to be part of the national identity.”

They have no problem with the proliferation of digital assets because they prepare their digital currencies for the central bank, and their way to sell them is that the money is.”Part of the national identity.I get it. But what about this war against Bitcoin?

second search Leads us to Newsbit, who apparently quotes a much more straightforward president from President Erdogan:

The president replied, “We have absolutely no intention of embracing cryptocurrencies,” adding, “On the contrary, we have a war against them. We will never support cryptocurrencies. Because we pursue our own currency that has its own identity.”

Well, we now know that Erdogan has never said anything about a war against Bitcoin and has always been referring to cryptocurrencies. And that, in the code, was always talking about the digital Turkish lira. However, did he really say it all? This quote seems suspiciously close to the original Bloomberg quote, and this quote was not verbatim. If the president says it all so clearly, why doesn’t Bloomberg quote him?

It’s time to consult primary sources

Fortunately for us, Newsbit has been linked to Anadolu Agency, a state-run Turkish news agency. This is as close to primary sources as we will get. A report on the entire event mentions cryptocurrencies at the end. Is the quote in that report? What exactly did President Erdogan say? Well, according to Anadolu Agency:

Erdogan said that they do not face the problem of opening up to cryptocurrencies, on the contrary, they have a separate war and struggle against them.

Erdogan said: We will not give them such a bonus and we will not give them. Because we will continue our way with our money, which is our primary identity in this matter.”

This is correct! The exact quote is the same exact wording that Bloomberg initially used. So, Bloomberg literally copied and pasted their article. And the supposed Newsbit quote is just a paraphrase of that phrase. We don’t know exactly what President Erdogan said, but at least his intent is clear: Yes to his CBD. The war on cryptocurrency. And we know for sure that he didn’t say anything about a war against Bitcoin.

Cryptocurrency and Bitcoin are not synonymous, journalists.
